I believe poetry is God’s gift to man for vulnerable expression. David through Psalms gave us a glimpse of what His secret place with God was like, and today, we read that book and are able to feel how he felt even when we find ourselves in similar spaces in life.

I spent this evening with Favour Emma and some amazing women in a space where we could understand God and find healing through this means of expression. That’s where this poem was birthed. I only pray that it gets to the right people. From my heart to my keyboard, through these words, to you who sees this, I hope you know that you are not alone.

They walked in when you least expected
Brought comfort and peace, or so it seemed
And took up more space than you were willing to give
The storm came, they showed strength
Never leaned into the strength of another the way you did
But something was not right
You saw it, you knew it
“But no one’s perfect,” you convinced yourself

“I would never willingfully hurt you,”
So they said
The rain came, the wind blew
And when you needed them the most
They went Avatar, handing you heart back in shattered pieces
*poof* they vanished
And so did the one who called you child

Suddenly, it’s all your fault
Your cross to carry, your pain to bear
Your efforts were not enough
In fact, nothing in their eyes
Plunged into a world of battles
Battles you never imagined
There you were at the forefront
To reclaim your identity
To restore your worth

You’ve asked God why
You’ve asked Him how
You’ve asked Him what would become of you
Tears poured, anger brewed
Your prayers never went without the shadows hovering in the middle

To love Jesus innocently once again
To always remember you are worth the fight
Worth the wait
To always remember that you are loved by your Father without performance
Just presence

He says to you,
“All these won’t matter a while from now
You are Mine
My very delight
I made no mistake
When I called you Hephzibah”
